Getting Remote Help via Google Chrome

We may be able to help you with your computer via remote support.

If you need to help from Geeks to the Rescue but you are outside our Perth service area, we may be able to help you via remote support. Remote support involves connecting to your computer from our computer via remote connection software. This lets us see your screen so, rather than trying to explain the problem over the phone, you can actually show us the problem right on your computer. With your permission, we can then use our mouse and keyboard to work on your computer and resolve the problem for you.

It is completely secure because we can only connect to your computer when you have given us a unique code that changes every 30 minutes. For additional peace of mind, every 30 minutes the remote connection disables our control of your computer and waits for you to click on a “continue” button on your screen before we can resume work.

To allow us to make a remote connection to your computer, the remote connection software we use is Chrome Remote Desktop. To make use of this, you must:

  1. have the Google Chrome web browser installed,
  2. be signed in with a Google account
  3. have the Chrome Remote Desktop extension installed.

Google Chrome web browser

If you have the this icon Google Chrome icon on your Taskbar (the bar across the bottom of your screen) or just sitting on your Desktop (the place where you see all the icons when you first log into your computer), then you likely have Google Chrome already installed. If not, you need to download and install Google Chrome.

Google account

If you don’t already have a Google account, you can get one for free. Go to Gmail and click on the Create an Account button and follow the prompts.

If you think you have a Gmail account already, try clicking on the Sign in button instead as it may show you a list of one or more Gmail accounts you have created previously. If you have an account already set up, it will will open your Google account already have a Gmail account, clicking on that link may take you into it anyway.

Chrome Remote Desktop extension

Finally, you need to install the Chrome Remote Desktop extension. To do this, you have to have Chrome open and either search for Chrome Remote Desktop or, if you are reading this from within Chrome, just click here and then click on the Share my screen button.

You will be asked to sign into your Google account first and then download and install the extension.
